Recruiting & Player Guidance
Different Strengths. Different Timelines. Different Paths.
Recruiting is different for every player.
Some players develop early. Others take longer physically, mentally, or emotionally. Our job is to help players continue developing while helping them understand where they fit in the process and what opportunities make sense for them.
At Grey Ducks Baseball, we believe one of the most important jobs of a coach is to advocate for their players.
That doesn’t mean overselling players or promising opportunities that haven’t been earned. It means helping players and families navigate the process honestly while continuing to focus on development and performance.
The best thing a player can do for recruiting is take important feedback, continue getting better while developing a plan of attack to achieve their goals.
Players We’ve Helped Guide
While Grey Ducks Baseball is a newer organization, the experience behind our staff is not.
Over the years, our staff has helped impact and guide hundreds of players who have gone on to play college baseball at multiple levels including programs such as:
- University of North Carolina Baseball
- University of Tennessee Baseball
- Arizona State Baseball
- University of Arizona Baseball
- Oregon State Baseball
- Oklahoma State
- Washington State Baseball
- Coastal Carolina
- Dallas Baptist Baseball
- University of Kentucky
- University of Minnesota
- North Dakota State
- Central Arizona College
- Iowa Western
And many others across Division II, III, NAIA, and Junior College baseball.
Experience Matters
Over the last 15+ years- our founder, Brett Thorney has worked throughout multiple levels of baseball including:
- Running club baseball programs
- High school coaching
- College coaching
- Professional scouting
- Recruiting guidance
- Player evaluation and showcase events
A major part of that experience came while serving as a Scouting Director for Prep Baseball Report in Arizona.
That role involved evaluating and promoting players daily while working directly with college coaches throughout the recruiting process. It also meant helping coaches identify players, communicating evaluations, organizing events, and connecting schools with information they trusted.
One of the biggest things learned through that experience was the importance of relationships and credibility.
College coaches don’t want players oversold to them. They don’t want wasted time or bad information. Real relationships are built through honest evaluations and transparency about where players are currently at in their development.
Because of that approach, many college programs continue to trust our evaluations and follow up on players we recommend.
How We Help Our Players
The recruiting process can be overwhelming for players and families. Our goal is to help simplify that process while continuing to focus on long-term development.
We help our players with:
- Honest evaluations and feedback
- Understanding their own development timeline
- Identifying schools that fit academically and athletically
- Learning how to communicate with coaches
- Understanding which showcases and camps actually provide value
- Choosing tournaments strategically
- Social media and self-promotion guidance
- Collecting video and player data
- Developing a plan for their goals
- Continuing to develop on the field throughout the process
- Having real conversations with players and families
At the end of the day, there is no shortcut in the recruiting process.
Players earn opportunities through development, consistency, preparation, and performance. Our job is to help guide players through that process honestly while continuing to help them improve on and off the field.
Not every player’s path will look the same — and that’s okay.
Whether a player’s goal is Division I baseball, college baseball at any level, or simply becoming the best version of themselves, our staff is committed to helping them build a plan, understand their timeline, and continue moving forward.
